Bulgaria Flag colours have undergone some changes since Russian rule

Bulgaria Flag

Flags of the world - Bulgaria

The Bulgarian flag was officially born on November 22, 1990.

Prior to this the flag of Bulgaria was under Russian rule, and held the Russian flag colours.

The red and white colours of the flag are colours that have been taken from the Pan Slavic flag.

Before 1990 the white stripe on the flag contained the coast of arms, and the green colour was previously Blue from the Russian Tricolour.

The president of Bulgaria (Georgi Parvanov), often calls for the flag to be flown in every town in BG with purity and immaculateness as a symbol of statehood.

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes of white, green and red. The flag has actually been used since after the Russo-Turkish war (1877-1878) where Bulgaria gained its independence. The flag was re-introduced in 1990/1991 with the Bulgarian constitution.

After the liberational Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), the flag was described in the Tarnovo Constitution of 1879 as follows:“ Art. 23. The Bulgarian people's flag is three-coloured and consists of white, green and red colours, placed horizontally.[1] ”

In later history, the former emblem on the left side of the white stripe was removed after 1500: it contained a lion within a wreath of pie ears below a red five-pointed star and above a ribbon bearing the years 681 (the year the first Bulgarian state was established) and 1944 (the year when the Bulgarian Communist Party took power).

The new Constitution of Bulgaria, adopted in 1991, describes the Bulgarian flag as follows:“ Art. 166. The flag of the Republic of Bulgaria shall be a tricolour: white, green, and red from top, placed horizontally.[2]
