There are many orphan children in Bulgaria. It becoming a largely popular country option for people wanting to adopt a child.

Many people are often put off by long the adoption process in other countries, and look to Bulgaria adoptions as a faster option.

Children are cared for by orphange workers and caretakers, and although they are looked after well, they are living in poor conditions and most are in need of a loving home.

The greatest numbers of children are those from 6 - 14 years, although children from the age of twelve months are able to be adopted.

In 2004, U.S. citizens adopted approximately 110 children from Bulgaria. Children available for adoption include healthy and special needs boys and girls, generally between the ages of 22 months and 8 years.

Bulgaria Adoption: The process

The initial process largely depends on the family. Many families their home study on adoption in 2 - 3 months, and in some cases much faster.

First step in the process is choosing an agency. After you have chosen an agency, they will schedule "home study" visits to you to ensure you are fully prepared. After the home sutdy is done you can submit your paperwork (USCIS - I600A).

You can then begin organizing paperwork for the foriegn dossier. When this is done it is submitted for approval to the Bulgaria adoptions section.The full process should take approx. 12 to 24 months.

Can I adopt more than one child?

You can adopt more than one child at once if you wish. Sometimes siblings are available for adoption in Bulgaria, and it is possible to adopt non-related children into loving homes

All children are screened for HIV, Hepatitis B, and venereal disease. Medical reports are provided for all children and sometimes videos are provided if the child has special needs.

How many trips to Bulgaria will I need to make?

To complete the full process, you will need to travel to Bulgaria at least once and normally two times.The first trip will commence the process and the secomd should be to bring your child home with you. It is possible to ask for an escort to bring your child home if desired, but this is not recommended for the welfare of the child.

You can book a flight to Bulgaria during all times of the year.

The cultural experience of knowing your child's home country proves to be beneficial for many parents.

Both married couples and single women qualify to adopt children in Bulgaria. Preference however, will normally be given to two parent families who have less than two children currently living in their home.
