Bulgaria attractions - Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most beautiful attractions in Bulgaria.

City of the Czars and home of the monestriesVeliko Tarnovo is a city in north central Bulgaria and the administrative centre of Veliko Tarnovo Province. Often referred to as the "City of the Czars", Veliko Turnovo is located on the Yantra River and is famous as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, attracting many tourists with its unique architecture.

Veliko Tarnovo is also one of the oldest settlements in Bulgaria, having a history of more than 5 millennia, as the first traces of human presence dating from the 3rd millennium BC are on Trapezitsa Hill.

Famous for its historical monuments it boasts over 7000 years of history.


Modern Veliko Tarnovo


Modern Veliko Tarnovo is a town that is museum rich in many cultural museums and monuments and all types of different preserves. It is seen to be one of the best Bulgaria attractions.

Every year the town is visited by thousands of tourists from Bulgaria and from abroad. It is a prime concern of the whole nation to study and preserve the numerous historical and architectural monuments, the rich museums and the museum cultural artifacts.

Modern Veliko Tarnovo, with its modern Central Mall shopping Centre with multiplex cinemas, ten pin bowling alleys and host of stores, is in contrast to Gurko Street and Veliko Turnovo's old parts. Arbanassi is just up the hill from Veliko Turnovo, accessed by bike (Dangerous road), on foot (Very scenic) or by car.
The monasteries and churches in Veliko Tarnovo are also worth a visit.

Getting there

From the larger Bulgarian cities you can travel to Veliko Turnovo by train or bus.

Regular bus service is available from Sofia and Varna to Veliko Turnovo with the buses arriving at the “Yug” (South) bus station or next to Hotel “Etar” (depending on which company you’re using). The journey takes about 3 hours and costs about 11 leva.The buses from Plovdiv (a 4 hour journey), Ruse (2 hours) and Burgas (5 hours), arrive at the “Zapad” (West) bus station.

You can travel from Plovdiv and Ruse directly to Veliko Turnovo by train, and from Sofia and Varna you can get a train to Gorna Oriahovitsa, and from there to Veliko Turnovo you can get a connection train, taxi, mini bus or local bus line No.10 (distance to VT is 7km.)

Every day there are international trains to Istanbul and Bucharest, which pass through great Bulgaria attractions such as Veliko Turnovo. Also from Gorna Oriahovitsa train station you can get a connection to Athens or Belgrade.
