Bulgarian schools

Wondering what Bulgarian schools are like?

Schools in BG provide compulsory education for Bulgarian children from the ages of 6 to 16.

Education in Bulgaria is supported by the state and the Ministry of Education, and the system is primarily designed to produce skilled technical workers for Bulgarian industry.

Education in Bulgaria is free and just like most other European countries it is organized into three tiers: primary schools, secondary schools, and further education.

Secondary schools in BG are divided into four types: general educational schools, language schools, vocational schools, and foreign schools.

There are a few private schools, but these are still relatively rare.

There are many schools that welcome international students and some of these are the best and most competitive schools in Bulgaria.

The American College of Sofia is a secondary school that offers a very high standard of education to both Bulgarian and foreign students and classes are taught in English by Bulgarian, American, and Canadian teachers.

The Anglo-American School in Knyazhevo is where most of the children of Diplomats and foreign business people go and the teachers are mainly American and Canadian.

Further education is becoming more readily available in Bulgaria and the country currently has more than forty institutions of higher learning including the University of Sofia, which contains the largest and most advanced educational and research centre in Bulgaria.

Degree courses can often take as long as five years to complete and entrance examinations for state commissioned places are very strict.

Additional places are available, but these are not funded by the state.
