Maps of Bulgaria

You could of course decide to drive wherever the mood takes you, but that might leave you stranded in the middle of the Carpathian Mountains with only a few goats available to ask directions, so it is probably wise to have some backup in the form of a map.

Roads in Bulgaria are frequently in a very poor condition and once you head out of the cities, you are likely to be sharing them with numerous ramshackle carts pulled at a snail’s pace by scruffy horses. This might be considered extremely annoying by those drivers used to the luxuries of motorways and autobahns, but if you look on the bright side, at least you will be able to enjoy the scenery as you putter along in your decrepit hire car.

A Bulgaria road map should help you find your way from town to town as long as you do not stray too far from the populated areas. Many roads are badly marked and whilst road signs do exist, like buses, they tend to be noticeably absent when you really need one.

If a road sign does happen to be fortuitously present at a crucial junction, you might have a hard time making any sense of it because there is a good chance it will be in the Cyrillic alphabet

You could of course take the view that wherever you end up, it is likely to be an exciting adventure!

If you really want to explore the hidden corners of Bulgaria, you will be able to purchase a road map from service station.

Some maps are more detailed than others, so it is probably a good idea to decide exactly what you are planning on doing once you have your car and the open road beckons. If you are intent on discovering the tourist hot spots of Bulgaria, then a detailed map of the main tourist areas is a good idea. If you fancy hiking in the mountains of Bulgaria, then a topographical road map might be a better choice.

City road maps are useful if you intend on staying in Bulgaria for a longer period, for example if you are likely to be there on business. There are lots of detailed road maps of Sofia the capital of Bulgaria, available either in stores, or online.

Most satellite navigation systems will also have Bulgaria road maps available for download to guide you on your travels.
