Bulgarian women are widely renowned for their fiery personalities and sultry good looks and the annual beauty pageant is an ideal opportunity for all these gorgeous Bulgarian ladies to come forward and try their chances at winning a place in the coveted Miss World contest.
The first title contest took place in the 1920s and proved very popular, but following the outbreak of hostilities in the country during World War II, it was discontinued.
In the aftermath of the war, Bulgaria fell to the communists and in the decades that followed, the repressive regime refused to allow the contest to take place, so it was not until the communist regime ended that the national beauty contest was re-established once again.
The annual beauty contest searches for the most beautiful woman between the ages of 17 and 25 and in recent years has been organised by a Bulgarian model agency.
In the early 2000s there was a great deal of controversy over the organisation of the contest and for a couple of years, two rival contests were staged, but in 2004, the Visage Models agency won the right to hold the Miss Bulgaria contest.
Visage Models agency was founded by a former winner of the Miss BG national beauty contest, Evgenia Kalkandjieva, and she later went on to reach 6th place in the Miss World beauty contest, which is the highest place any Bulgarian contestant has reached to date.
Over the years, many extremely beautiful Bulgarian women have won the coveted title of Miss BG, but an interesting report in the Sofia Echo in 2009 pointed out the surprising fact that of the previous eight winners, only one was a blonde: the 2009 winner, Vanya Peicheva, who at 24 was also the oldest winner of a Miss Bulgaria beauty contest.
Six were brunettes and one was a redhead, which strongly suggests that Bulgarian’s have a serious penchant for brunettes, unlike many other European countries where blonde women always attract lots of attention.
