Getting Around - Car Rental Bulgaria, Domestic Airlines and Bus Travel

Car Rental Bulgaria

Car rental in Bulgaria is probably the easiest way to get around.

Intergration into the EU 3 years ago has ensured Bulgaria's main roads are up to EU driving standards.

You can hire a car from any number of places prior to your visit or upon arrival.
Most major hire car companies will have an office in the larger cities such as Varna, Sofia and Bourgas.

If you can avoid my mistake (once, and never again!) of hiring the cheapest car possible and ended up with a Lada Niva (an old russian jeep from the 70's).If you are driving from Sofia to Varna...(some 370 kilometres) like I was it isnt a very sensible move.

It won't really move you fast enough to overtake anything at all and is a most uncomfortable drive!

NB: Its better to take a more "reliable" vehicle approach when it comes to car hire. You can pick up a car from around 30 Euros a day.

Domestic Flights in Bulgaria

The only domestic flights in Bulgaria are from Sofia to the Black Sea Coast.

Believe me, car rental Bulgaria is a much easier choice if you want adventure!

Bulgaria Air flies daily to Varna (single/return around 105 euros/160), with two or three daily flights between July and September.

Bulgaria air also flies between the capital and Burgas (single/return around 80/130 Euros).

Bulgaria is relatively compact and there are a wide range of train and bus services that are reliably and cheap.

The journey, however, is another mattter entirely. For more information about flying into Sofia from overseas see our getting there section.

It can take 8 hours from Sofia to the coast, so if this doesnt appeal you may look into flying with Air Bulgaria.

Bulgaria car rental and Airline alternatives....

There are other transport options in Bulgaria such as the bus.

The Bulgaria bus service links all cities, major towns and villages with transportation.

In some rural parts, the buses can be slow, old and uncomforatble - particularly when compared with city or private (only slightly more expensive than public) buses.

The private bus companies service runs accross the country.

Bulgaria Bus Companies

Etap-Group - Ph: 02-945 3939 www.etapgroup.com

Biomet - Ph: 02-963 1366 www.biomet-bg.com

These two operate from Sofia and link to most seaside towns.

You will find that all the busses have the destinations written on them (in Cyrillic) and you can also find a timetable inside the bus stations (also in Cyrillic).

Costs

Bus travel in Bulgaria is very cheap by comparison to the rest of Western Europe.

You will also be able to get a cross country ticket (Sofia to Varna or Bourgas) for around 20 lv to 25 lv and shorter destinations will cost around 8 lv.
