Mountains in Bulgaria: The diverse Balkan landscape is a huge attraction to Bulgaria

Mountains in Bulgaria are a prime attraction of the many things to do in Bulgaria

They are primarily located in Southern Bulgaria.

The Balkan mountaints are frequenting more and more visitors due to its mountainous geography and great history.

The mountains in Bulgaria were stomping ground of the ancient Traceans long ago.

They are also home to the Rodopi, Pirin, Rila and Balkan mountains.

Southern Bulkan peaks not only provide a natural source of mountain water, but also have spectacular views of the lakes of Bulgaria.

These mountains are a favourite among hikers and tourists alike.


Rila Mountains

One of the beautiful places in Bulgaria are the Rila Mountains.

Beneath the peaks, Rila lakes is home to 180 lakes, streams and springs that produce pure mountain water.

These waters are perfect for day tripping travellers and hikers to wander around the stunning Seven Lakes.

A hiking trail leads to the spectacular Rila Monestry.

Rila Mountains include Bulgaria's biggest ski resorts Bansko and Borovets.

Rila national park is alwasys open and is a sanctuary for wildlife and flora. With 144 sq kms of forest and 130 sq km of Alpine pastures.


Pirin Mountains

The Pirin Mountains has been visited for centuries for their 230 springs and 186 lakes. The highest peak is Mt Vihen (291m) and it is near the ski resort of Bansko.

Pirin national park is the largest in Bulgaria.

Besides skiing in Bansko and hiking visitors to the Pirin region can enjoy some of Bulgaria's best wine at the offbeat village of Melnick with 18th and 19th century houses.

You can also visit the mineral baths near Sandanski, which is also the birthplace of the legendry Roman slace leader Spartacus.


Rodopi Mountatins

The Rodopi mountains in Bulgaria cover much of the border occupied by Greece and Bulgaria (85% of which is in Bulgaria).

When compared with the Rila and Pirin mountain ranges, the Rodopi mountains see fewer visitors, with the exception of Chepalare and Pamporovo.

The Rodopi mountains are home to 200 types of birds, a rich wildflower selection, brown bears, wild goats and a few wolves thrown in there as well. Along with winter skiing, summertime outdoors activities such as horseriding, hiking and caveing are all excellent here.

The batak and dospat lakes are providing opportunities for boating and fishing.
